Sydney

No other city can offer Sydney's vibrancy - its stunning attractions, great climate and friendly people ensure that it continues to exceed visitor expectations.

The city of events

Sydney is renowned for its success in hosting high profile international events.

Sydney Harbour Bridge

In the year 2000, the eyes of the world were on Sydney as it welcomed visitors for the Olympic Games.  In 2003, the city played host to thousands of international visitors for the Rugby World Cup spectacle.

Sydney's facilities, design and atmosphere - along with the vitality and friendliness of its residents - were fundamental to the success of these events.

These attributes have also made Sydney a winner for numerous international business events.

In January 2005, more than 13,000 Asian delegates attended the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre for a major incentive event.  Only three months earlier, the Centre was the venue for 4000 delegates attending the inaugural worldwide McDonalds manager convention.

The city's internationally regarded scientific and medical fraternity also plays a key role in attracting international congresses.  In 2005, the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre will open its doors to more than a dozen medical and scientific congresses, including the 4000-delegate World Congress on Pain.

A city that supports events

Marketing an event in Sydney is simple.  Not only is the city a natural drawcard for delegates and visitors, but Government and industry bodies work together to support events coming to Sydney.

The city's official meetings body, the Sydney Convention and Visitors Bureau (SCVB), is also on hand to helps organisers with their event.

The SCVB can assist with bidding for events, sourcing suppliers and identifying funding opportunities.

A city with a wealth of experiences

Manly Beach

Sydney is known for its harbour lifestyle, fantastic beaches and good weather - all contributing to a relaxed environment that permeates the city and its visitors.

The city's dining options are numerous - from an alfresco seafood lunch at Circular Quay to a three-course meal at Bondi Beach.

Sydney's restaurant scene also reflects the city's cultural diversity, with inspiration from the finest Asian, European and Middle Eastern cuisines, combined with the freshest Australian ingredients, to create a gourmet paradise.

Cafe at Circular Quay

Shopping opportunities are abundant and include a mixture of shopping complexes, boutique stores and colourful markets, many of which are located along the foreshores of Sydney's famous beaches and harbour areas.

Under warm skies, the harbour is an everyday focus that can be enjoyed from the top of the famous Harbour Bridge or from a boat on the water.

Just west of Sydney lies the beautiful Blue Mountains, while to the north the Hunter Valley wine region beckons. Both regions are perfect for visitor day trips.

A gateway city

Sydney is Australia's main port and principal destination, serviced by nearly 40 national and international carriers. In fact, visitors can fly directly or with only one stop from most major cities in the world.

Sydney is also the gateway to other Australian cities and attractions, such as the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru (Ayers Rock) and the outback.
